Grand Opening of Expansion

Highlighted by a special ribbon cutting ceremony, the Hannah B.G. Shaw Home commemorated the grand opening of its new expansion June 20th, marking the creation of the first household model of care in a skilled nursing home setting in the region. An Open House for the public will take place in the near future.

“We are excited to announce the opening of this expansion,” remarked Home President Bruce Atwood, “This endeavor has been many years in the making and we believe it exemplifies the Home's commitment to the community-at-large to provide quality continuum of care to individuals in a community-based setting that thrives with emphasis on dignity and personal choice.”

Moving away from the traditional medical care model of design, the new design of the addition reflects the national movement of culture change in the long term care settings. The Shaw Home’s 3-story, 60,000 sq ft addition is now home to four households each encompassing 10 private bedrooms and baths, and shared kitchen, living and dining areas; as well as a 12 bed Memory Care household with enclosed outdoor gardens and patio area. “With the opening of the new households, the Home seeks to change the delivery of care model to reflect a true resident centered care approach within neighborhood like communities,” explained Atwood, “The infrastructure will support a home-like environment that enables residents to live as independently as they possibly can with dignity, respect, and peace of mind with the support of 24/7 nursing services.”

With this opening, the Home is excited to announce the expansion of its service areas to include Short Term Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing, Long-Term Care, Memory Care, and Residential Care. “With the addition of Short Term Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing and Memory Care services, we are finally able to provide continuum of care to our residents and the community-at-large. Individuals can expect the same high-level quality of care and customer service we are known for.” stated Kristine Donnelly Executive Director of the Home.

The excitement among residents, staff and the community-at-large has been growing as they watched the construction unfold over the past eighteen months and come to fruition. “It’s been a wonderful experience watching the new addition evolve.” added Sally McLean, a resident at The Shaw Home, “The end product is better than I imaged—it’s beautiful. I am fortunate to be a part of this wonderful community.”

Ms. Donnelly likened the opening to a extended journey that is still in progress, noting that phase one of the construction is completed, and phase two is underway wherein the Home is renovating another unit into a new designated 15 bed short-term rehab unit which will be connected to the new, already completed, 3,000 sq ft therapy center outfitted with the latest and most sophisticated rehab equipment. The project is targeted to meet LEED Silver Certification, helping to mitigate effects on the environment.

Hannah B.G. Shaw Home is a 40 bed residential care and 52 bed skilled nursing home. Founded by the late Hannah Bartlett Griffith Shaw, the Home opened its doors in 1941 as a non-profit corporation. Rooted in the traditions of home, the facility focuses on resident choice as being fundamental to resident care. Resident participation, coupled with family members and the professional interdisciplinary team yield some of the most positive outcomes in long term care. Quality of life, quality of care, and clinical care appropriateness are the cornerstone of the Home’s culture.

Rated twice by US News & World Report in the top 25 facilities in the nation and three times by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health customer satisfaction surveys as number two in the state, Hannah B.G. Shaw Home should be considered as a potential home to place a loved one.
