National Nursing Home Week

If you walked into the Hannah B. Griffith Shaw Home for Aged, Inc. last Wednesday, you would have been met with smiles and laughter. The atmosphere was jovial as residents and staff were dressed in their favorite sports attire, in the air the smell of popcorn and cotton candy lingered, and the sounds of singing resonated in the residential dining room as the mascot made its appearance--one, two, three strikes you’re out...

This is an example of just one of the special events the Shaw Home held in celebration of National Nursing Home Week which was from May 12 and continued through May 18, 2013. This year’s theme was “Team Care” and staff wore Team Care buttons to show their support. Each day the Home celebrated with a different theme—Western Day, Root Beer Float Day, Sports Day, Hat Day and Hawaiian Day. There was a daily “Guess How Many” game wherein the individual who guessed the closest number of items won prizes. Residents and staff alike enjoyed the festivities.

There is a difference of opinion within the Home as to which theme day was most popular. Some residents favored Root Beer Float Day. One resident remarked, “I haven’t had a root beer float since I was a child. This is so nice.” Other residents enjoyed Hawaiian Day and the Luau. Many thought Sports Day was a home run. In the end, regardless of what day was preferred, the week was made special by all who participated.

Kristine Donnelly, Administrator of the Home said, “The residents along with the staff had a week filled with festivities. The staff’s planning and involvement made the celebrations of National Nursing Home Week a huge success. The residents had so much fun; they are asking, 'What can we celebrate next week?'"
