Topping Off Ceremony

The Hannah B. Griffith Shaw Home for the Aged, Inc. recently celebrated its latest construction milestone of its new 3-story, 60,000 sq ft addition with a “topping off” ceremony. The ceremony was attended by the Home’s residents and staff, its Board of Directors, contractors, local dignitaries and community leaders.

The topping off ceremony is a traditional construction milestone at a stage in which the building’s frame is completed. The last steel beam was signed by residents, staff, and the Home’s Board of Directors after which it was hoisted by crane into place.

The first phase of the expansion is scheduled for completion March 2014 and will be home to four households each encompassing 10 private bedrooms and baths, and shared kitchen, living and dining areas; as well as a 12 bed Alzheimer’s Care unit with enclosed outdoor gardens and patio area.

In the summer of 2014, the second phase of construction is scheduled for completion which includes renovation of the existing skilled unit into a new state of the art 15 bed short-term rehab unit connected to a new 3,000 sq ft therapy center outfitted with the latest and most sophisticated rehab equipment. The expansion will also include a new main entry, lobby, bakery/café, recreation lounge, a spacious community center, beauty salon, and administrative space.

The excitement among residents and staff has been growing as they watched the construction unfold over the past several months.

“We are one step closer to turning the vision of our Home into reality—we will be able to provide continuum of care to our residents under a new delivery of care model that reflects a true resident centered approach” said Kristine Donnelly Administrator of The Shaw Home, “The infrastructure will support an environment that enables residents to live as independently as they possibly can with dignity, respect, and peace of mind.”

“It’s been a wonderful experience watching them build the new addition.” added Merilyn Hashem, a resident at The Shaw Home.
